swine flu.

I’m sick of hearing about swine flu. Being of the bacon persuasion myself, I’d almost call that slander. What did pigs ever do to you, America, eh? Other than give their lives so you could eat delicious, delicious bacon. Every major news channel needs to quit scaring people. This is getting ridiculous.

Haven’t posted in a while as things are ramping up for finals week.

Badass interview with Tracyanne Campbell from Camera Obscura.

In NHL playoff news, the Devils managed to blow a lead at the very end of game 7 with Carolina, allowing the ‘Canes to score two goals and take the series. This means my beloved Pittsburgh Penguins will be playing the Washington Capitals in round two. This is going to get awesome.

kurt loder, where have you gone?

In my younger days, before the internet, blogs, twitter, .com anything and before I had enough money to purchase my own magazine subscriptions I used to get news and info about upcoming albums from one source: Mtv News. “What’s that, Kurt Loder? Poison has a new album coming out? Awesome!” “Oh, Tabitha Soren, I can’t believe some member or other of Motley Crue has been hospitalized and/or arrested in some kind of drug-or-alcohol-related incident.”

Does anyone remember The Week In Rock? Does anyone care? Does that show even air anymore? I guess if it did it’d be on at some weird time on MTV2 or something.

Hmmm…I sound like a Generation X Andy Rooney. “I remember when MTV used to play music. I remember when they used to have relevant news about music. Blah, blah, blah.” That wasn’t really the point of this post.

The point was it’s amazing to me the number of ways one can promote their band/cause/self on their own, without corporate sponsorship. Facebook, blogs, websites, text messaging, Twitter, Blip…it’s staggering to think about the amount of information out there. Staggering and kind of frightening. I’m sort of torn on the issue. I think there’s an information overload in the world today but I also like the grassroots, egalitarian aspect of the whole thing.

That said, in the past one had to really work at stuff like this. If you wanted to get your band’s name out there, you had to make your own flyers, put them up yourself, make your own tapes, mail stuff out to people yourself, make your own zines, stickers and posters. Now you can just record an MP3 in Garage Band and post it to your MySpace page. There’s not as much work involved. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing.

Please feel free to discuss in the comments section. I might, eventually, write a more well-written version of this same discussion with myself at a later time but I’m not going to do it now.

I’ve let the bacon-related stuff kind of pile up so I’m going to post a few here, randomly. Enjoy!

The difference between men & women.
Bacon

The BAK-47 which must have started as a joke when someone was high and then one guy took it too far. Like Everybody Loves Raymond. “Hey, Ray, you should have your own sitcom!” Sort of funny but only once.

Stay tuned.

best week ever? um, no, holden mcneil.

It’s been kind of a fucked up week…quite uneven. I’ve been sick as hell, Camera Obscura’s new record My Maudlin Career started streaming a week before it’s release date on NPR.org Monday night, which was awesome. I’ve been listening to it pretty much constantly since then. I got an e-mail today from 4AD, Camera Obscrua’s record label, that there was something amiss with the vinyl mastering so the pressings were delayed and would be shipped late. Kind of a bummer except that they e-mailed me a digital copy of the album so I actually get it early. Nice!

I probably failed a Spanish exam earlier today which sucks but I had a fairly good show though the weather was too nice and I was in too good a mood, despite failing el examen de espanol. Played some stuff of the depression playlist but I just don’t see myself doing the show now. As we approachTake Back The Nightkeep an ear out for the Uppity Women show I’ve been planning for a while.

Last night: Pittsburgh 4 – Philadelphia 1. Wooooo! I love the playoffs.

Here’s a few things before I go.

Music Loving Babies?
Personally, I had my son listening to The Ramones in utero and to this day he loves them, along with the Sex Pistols, the Clash, The Stray Cats and all manner of other music. He has an original pressing copy of Rocket to Russia waiting for him on his 18th birthday. I remember when he was a tiny, tiny baby and I used to hold him and dance to that album and he would fall asleep on my shoulder.

And now, Velocity Girl.
