omlette du fromage

I think that’s pretty self-explanatory. The other day I went to the post office to pick up a package but they were not open. (Who knew the post office didn’t open until 9:30 on Saturday?) so I went to a near by farmer’s market to kill some time. I had not really intended on getting anything but I saw some pretty tasty looking tomatoes and it was all over. Once I bought them I was determined to get the ingredients for a delicious omelette…an omelette du fromage.

After the tomatoes, I purchased some fresh cilantro, some local pork sausage and some beautiful heirloom merlot peppers, that are a striking deep purple (not to be confused with Deep Purple) and I picked up my package and headed home.

Before I started cooking, I needed tunes, which were lovingly provided by Drew Barrymore and the Whip It soundtrack.

After I had the music going it was time to get out the ingredients and utensils I’d need to prepare my breakfast masterpiece. I have my tomatoes, cilantro, local farm-raised sausage, home baked local bread and merlot peppers…which makes me a purple pepper eater. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

I unwrapped the sausage and got it cooking in one pan, while I started prepping the veggies. Look how lovely this merlot pepper is. I’ll have to get more when the farmer’s market opens again.

I cracked three eggs and added salt, pepper and, of course, green Tabasco sauce before whisking them with a little milk and putting them in my frying pan over medium heat. I then laid down several slices of queso fresco, a mild, unaged Mexican cheese and piled on the sausage, peppers, tomatoes and cilantro.

I love omelets, but the flip is always the hardest part. I was lucky in that I only experienced a small crack, rather than a total catastrophic explosion, as I usually do when making omelets…which is why I usually just do what’s called a “scramble” or what I normally call, “cut up a bunch of stuff, throw it in a pan with some eggs and mix it all around,” which is delicious but kind of ugly and lacking a certain je ne sais quoi, if you will. Regardless, I managed to do it well this time, which made me happy since I was taking pictures and all.

Mmmm...melty cheese...omnomnomnom

I also decided to cook up some tasty Heinz beans, English style. I’m not sure why more people don’t eat beans with breakfast here in the States but it’s a British tradition, and one I quite like.

Heinz beans...jolly good!

I toasted some of the sun dried tomato and basil bread I got from the farmer’s market, made a pot of Earl Grey tea and sat down for a nice breakfast while I watched some NCIS marathon action.

Now, a couple of notes. First, this is my frist attempt at a “foodie” blog post. I kept meaning to do it and forgot to take pictures of several other cooking projects. My pictures were taken with the 5mp camera on my Motorola A855 Droid, so they quality isn’t nearly as good as my friend Christa over at Le Petit Brioche, whose pictures (and recipes) are significantly nicer than mine. If her blog doesn’t make you drool, you should just eat saw dust for the rest of your life because you have no taste.

Second, I bought this food and started this post in November, right before the farmer’s market closed up for the winter, but just got around to finishing it today, February 1st…ah, snow days, they’re great for catching up on stuff. Interestingly enough, I was wearing the shirt I picked up from the post office the day I bought the food and made the omelet in this post. I’m not sure exactly what that means.
